Just ten minutes into our road trip, my husband pulled over and screamed, ‘Get out!’

Fear and anger surged through me as I held Caleb close on the side of I-17. My husband had abandoned us, leaving no phone, no way to call for help, just chaos and the roar of passing vehicles. I whispered to Caleb, trying to calm both of us, even as my heart pounded with helplessness. Panic threatened to overwhelm me, but I forced myself to think, scanning the roadside for any sign of assistance.

The woman stayed with us, providing water and comfort as Caleb clung to me, slowly finding his calm. In her presence, I realized I wasn’t powerless. Though the road ahead would be difficult, we weren’t alone—support existed in unexpected places, and that knowledge steadied my resolve.

When Anna arrived, relief washed over me. She hugged us tightly, guiding us into her car, and I felt, for the first time that day, a flicker of safety.
