My Parents See Me as an ATM—but This Time I Refuse to Pay

Growing up, the woman always felt that her younger brother was the favorite in the family. At first she assumed it was because he was the youngest, but over time she realized her parents consistently treated him differently. Even as adults, the pattern continued. While her parents never helped with her wedding or supported her when she struggled with raising her two children, they constantly asked her to help her brother whenever he needed something.

Over the years she repeatedly stepped in. She bought him a car when he turned 18 because their parents couldn’t afford it. When he lost his job, she allowed him to move into her home and even gave him money when he struggled to pay his bills. However, when her brother got married two years ago, her parents asked her to cover part of his wedding expenses. At that point, she refused because she had just given birth to her second child and could not take on more financial stress.

Since then, tension in the family has grown. Her parents still ask for help occasionally, but she now carefully considers each request instead of automatically saying yes. Recently they called asking if she could watch her brother’s baby while he traveled for work. When she asked why his wife couldn’t care for the baby, they explained that her sister-in-law wanted to visit her own family during that time.

She refused, saying it wasn’t her responsibility to care for the baby simply because her sister-in-law wanted time away. Despite her mother offering to pay, she insisted her brother needed to learn to handle his own responsibilities. This caused a major conflict: her mother cried, her sister-in-law accused her of ruining the trip and being selfish, and now the family is not speaking to her.
