A Cry in the Wilderness
\nAfter twenty years in forestry, I thought I had seen it all\u2014fires, poachers, injured animals, human cruelty. Nothing could surprise me anymore. But that freezing morning proved me wrong.<\/p>\n
I slammed the door of my old car shut. Cold air stung my face and crept under my jacket. Even in a forest I knew like the back of my hand, a strange sense of anxiety settled over me. The woods themselves seemed to whisper a warning.<\/p>\n
I turned off the main road onto a narrow, forgotten track. Suddenly, a thin, piercing cry echoed from deep in the forest. It was neither a bark nor a howl. Its pain and despair tightened my chest. I shut off the engine. The cry came again\u2014clearer, more terrifying.<\/p>\n
