Around the table sat Jessica\u2019s parents, Rupert and Margaret Harrington, both impeccably dressed and exuding an air of affluence and entitlement. My son and his wife exchanged nervous glances, seated across from them.<\/p>\n

Rupert started the conversation with polite, probing questions about my work. \u201cSo, you\u2019re in consulting? Quite a competitive field, I imagine,\u201d he remarked, his tone layered with thinly veiled skepticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it can be,\u201d I replied, keeping my response deliberately vague. I wasn\u2019t about to elaborate on how my firm had secured multi-million dollar contracts or my role in advising some of the largest corporations in the country.<\/p>\n

It was during dessert, however, that the unexpected moment occurred. Their grandchild, a precocious little girl named Amelia, entered the room, carrying an old, worn-out toy in her hands. It was a stuffed bear, its fur matted and one of its eyes missing. She walked right up to me, ignoring everyone else, and plopped herself onto my lap.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa, can you fix Mr. Bear? He\u2019s broken,\u201d she asked, her innocent eyes looking up at me with trust.<\/p>\n

The room fell silent. My son looked mortified, perhaps wondering if this was another potential embarrassment. But I smiled, took the bear, and examined it closely. \u201cOf course, Amelia. Mr. Bear just needs a little care, just like everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

In that moment, the atmosphere shifted. The Harringtons, who had been rigid and judgmental, seemed to soften. Margaret broke the silence, her voice gentle. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful how you connect with her. Children really do have an innate sense, don\u2019t they?\u201d<\/p>\n
