I spent the night before rolling pizza dough and frosting cupcakes\u2014not because anyone demanded it, but because I wanted to. Liam invited kids from school, the twin girls from the apartment downstairs, even the mail carrier\u2019s daughter. Rosa came with a ridiculous chocolate cake, and the other parents dragged over folding chairs like we\u2019d been doing this for years.<\/p>\n
Halfway through, Liam climbed onto a picnic table. \u201cThis is the best birthday ever!\u201d he shouted, hair stuck to his forehead with sweat, face split in a huge grin. The kids cheered. I snapped a photo, catching him mid-laugh with the ocean behind him and candles blazing. Later that night, on a tired impulse, I posted it to the Facebook account I\u2019d practically abandoned. Mom had been telling everyone I\u2019d \u201crun off\u201d to punish her, that she had no idea where we were and was worried sick about Liam. Seeing him in that picture\u2014healthy, grinning in front of the ocean, cake bigger than any she\u2019d ever bought\u2014had apparently cracked something.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe kept saying, \u2018She looks fine. He looks fine. After everything I did,\u2019\u201d Melissa typed. \u201cThen Vanessa started yelling.\u201d
\nAnother message followed. Mom\u2019s planning a \u201cfamily meeting\u201d next month. She wants you there. Says it\u2019s time you came home and stopped confusing Liam.
\nI read the words over and over. Home. As if the apartment over the laundromat\u2014peeling linoleum, humming dryers, view of the dumpster\u2014wasn\u2019t the place where my son finally slept without worrying I\u2019d be gone at another one of Aunt Vanessa\u2019s events.<\/p>\n
That night I showed Liam the photo on my phone. \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d I asked.
\nHe studied it carefully. \u201cI look really happy,\u201d he said. \u201cHappier than at Grandma\u2019s. Even when there\u2019s cake.\u201d
\nLater, an unknown number buzzed my screen. We need to talk. <\/p>\n
Mom\u2019s serious about this meeting. Don\u2019t make it worse by ignoring her. Vanessa, of course.
