An old farmer was slowly driving down a country road, hauling a full load of manure in the back of his truck, when flashing lights appeared behind him. He pulled over, rolled down his window, and waited as a state trooper approached, already looking annoyed.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were speeding,\u201d the officer said firmly. \u201cI\u2019m going to have to give you a ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n
The farmer didn\u2019t argue. He simply nodded and glanced at the trooper, who was constantly swatting flies that seemed to be circling around him.<\/p>\n
After a moment, the farmer said calmly, \u201cYep\u2026 those flies are terrible this time of year.\u201d<\/p>\n
The trooper kept swatting and muttered, \u201cWhat flies?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe circle flies,\u201d the farmer replied.<\/p>\n
The officer paused. \u201cCircle flies?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYep,\u201d the farmer said. \u201cYou know\u2026 the kind that circle around horses.\u201d<\/p>\n
The trooper narrowed his eyes. \u201cAre you calling me a horse?\u201d<\/p>\n
The farmer quickly shook his head. \u201cOh no, officer. I\u2019d never call you a horse.\u201d<\/p>\n
The trooper stared at him for a moment, then relaxed slightly.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut,\u201d the farmer added slowly, \u201cit\u2019s hard to fool the flies.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was a long silence.<\/p>\n
The trooper looked at the farmer\u2026 then at the truck\u2026 then back at the farmer.<\/p>\n
After a few seconds, he handed back the farmer\u2019s license without writing the ticket.<\/p>\n
\u201cSlow it down,\u201d he said, trying not to smile.<\/p>\n
