The bell rang, signaling the end of the period. Chairs scraped, and students began to pack their things, still murmuring and casting glances back at him. Lucas gathered his belongings slowly, letting the room empty out. He wanted to avoid the crowded hallway, where whispers would surely follow him like shadows.<\/p>\n

Lucas decided to call his mother during lunch. He knew she would be busy, but he needed to hear her voice, needed to be reminded that what happened in that classroom didn\u2019t change the truth.<\/p>\n
He pulled out his phone and dialed her number, pressing the device to his ear and listening to it ring.\u201cHey, sweetheart,\u201d her voice came through, warm and steady. \u201cEverything okay?\u201dHer simple question was all it took for Lucas to feel a little more grounded. \u201cHey, Mom. Yeah, I\u2019m okay. Just needed to hear your voice.\u201d\u201cWhat\u2019s up? Did something happen at school?\u201d Her tone shifted slightly, a hint of concern threading through her words.<\/p>\n
He hesitated for a moment, then let out a soft sigh. \u201cYeah, it\u2019s Heroes\u2019 Week. I told the class about you being an F-22 pilot, but they didn\u2019t believe me.\u201dThere was a pause, then the sound of her gentle laughter. Not mocking, not dismissive\u2014just understanding. \u201cWell, I guess we\u2019ll have to show them, won\u2019t we?\u201dLucas couldn\u2019t help but smile, the corners of his mouth lifting for the first time that day. \u201cYeah, I guess so.\u201d\u201cTell you what,\u201d she said thoughtfully, \u201chow about I come to the school tomorrow? I can bring a few friends with me.<\/p>\n
We\u2019ll make sure Mr. Davies and the rest of your class know exactly who your mom is.\u201d\u201cReally?\u201d Lucas felt a spark of excitement, the thought of his mother walking into the school alongside her Navy SEAL friends already forming a vivid image in his mind.\u201cReally,\u201d she confirmed. \u201cWe\u2019ll turn this Heroes\u2019 Week into something they won\u2019t forget. Sound good?\u201d\u201cSounds perfect,\u201d Lucas replied, feeling a wave of relief washing over him. \u201cThanks, Mom.\u201d\u201cAnytime, sweetheart. You\u2019re stronger than you think, you know that?\u201dHe nodded, even though she couldn\u2019t see him. \u201cI know. Thanks to you.\u201dAs he hung up, Lucas felt a renewed sense of resolve. Tomorrow would be different. Tomorrow, the truth would walk through the doors of Northwood High, and it wouldn\u2019t need words to be heard.With a small smile, he made his way back inside, feeling lighter with each step.<\/p>\n
